ROUNDUP 617 - GET YOUR NEWS FIX NOW--WHAT'S REALLY UP!

PLEASE CHECK OUT BIG GAY NEWS FROM BIG GAY NEWS.COM!

I said I was done with roundup... but I keep getting pulled back in. This is the most time-consuming post category on this blog, so I was trying to veer away from it--I recorded video, but the video was in a format my computer hated, and even the bits I got converted froze up Windows Movie Maker, so that's going on the backburner now. Since I have TWO posts waiting in the wings that need other people's help to finish, I might-as-well newsify you--its been a big couple of days in LGBT news.

Should we be worried "TheCall" just put out a fatwa against gays?

The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes bill was successfully attached as an amendment to the Defense Department Reauthorization Bill yesterday; however, the bill is heading for a veto--not because of hate crimes--but because of a controversial McCain amendment pushing the continuance of an expensive F-22 program that both President Obama and Secretary Gates want cut. Obama threatened to veto an Authorization with the F-22 money attached LONG before the Hate Crimes bill ever was. Are we setting Obama up to piss us off again? Read Bilerico's "The F-22 v. The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill." Yet another problem remains--the language passed does not have free speech and association protections, which the ACLU rightly points out makes the law dangerous.

2010 or not: Why many gays and lesbians are wary about pushing a repeal of Proposition 8 in 2010; and why many just can't wait until 2012. Even NGLTF agrees its time to wait... but tell that to desperate CALIFORNIANS who have waited long enough.

Chris Geidner: In Iowa, judges are ousted.

Via Chris Geidner's Poliglot blog at Metro Weekly:

"

In Iowa, which declared Iowa's marriage ban unconstitutional under the state's constitution in 2009, the National Organization for Marriage got one of its first electoral victories this year. The judicial retention elections appear to have resulted in the replacement of all three justices up for a vote this year.

Here, as of 3:35 a.m. and with 1767 out of 1774 precincts reporting, are the Iowa Secretary of State's election results:

Supreme Court Justice David L. Baker
Yes 443437 45.75%
No 525865 54.25%

Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Streit
Yes 442459 45.6%
No 527921 54.4%

Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus
Yes 437118 44.99%
No 534486 55.01%

The court was unanimous in its 2009 ruling that Iowa's constitution required marriage equality."

Can we trust Rasmussen anymore?

HAPPY HOUR... POSTPONED.
