Being healthy or unhealthy can happen at any size. The tone was so negative and left such a bitter taste in my mouth I could only scoff when a hasty disclaimer was put up. It sounded like "But I have gay friends so its ok if I say these mean and hurtful things about gay people." If you want people to think you care about them no matter their size, don't focus on their size, focus on health. That "elephant" referenced on the show is a real person. People need empathy, not judgement. Who knows why she gained all that weight. Maybe she was depressed? Maybe she had a medical condition that went untreated? Maybe she was on medication that contributed to weight gain? Maybe . . . Maybe I don't care. All I care is that she is still treated with respect because she is a human and just as equal as you or I.
I'm not saying one cannot criticize the world they find themselves in, I'm not saying that at all. I am saying that the tone was so off putting that any message that is helpful was lost.
There are plenty of reasons to participate in physical activity and healthy eating habits that do not include "loosing weight." Sometimes weight needs to be lost, but the point was over generalized on the podcast. I hike because I like being outside in the fresh air. I eat a strict (in many people's eyes) diet because it prevents me from getting horrible migraine headaches. I don't do these things to loose weight, and I've noticed I'm much more healthier when I focus on (there's that word again) health than when I start looking in the mirror and panicking that I don't look like a super model.
Granted, Phil out of everyone on the show you were the most level headed on this subject but I was still confused why you didn't speak up more.
